Alitalia – Linee Aeree Italiane was founded in 1946 and headquartered in Rome, Italy. It was the flag carrier of Italy and one of Europe’s most recognizable legacy airline brands. Its IATA code was AZ, and its primary hubs were Rome Fiumicino Airport and Milan Malpensa Airport. Alitalia built its network on European routes while also operating long-haul international services connecting North America, South America, Asia, and the Middle East, playing a central role in Italy’s and the global air transport market for decades. In 2021, following corporate restructuring and bankruptcy proceedings, Alitalia ceased operations and its main aviation functions were succeeded by the new national carrier, ITA Airways.
