Cedars Christian College

Cedars Christian College

In 1981, Pastors Bill and Joan Beard established the College out of Lighthouse Church to offer a quality Christian education to church families in the area.

Its original 24 students worked out of Lighthouse Christian Centre before a temporary move to the beautiful Glennifer Brae site.

The College opened in its current Waples Rd site in 1986 and the school continued to show strong growth which necessitated an extensive building program to house classes from Kindergarten to Year 6.

By 1990 enrolments had continued to increase and the need for a secondary school became apparent with 16 students commencing high school.

Those early years were marked by site difficulties – dirt roads and demountable buildings because of the challenges of getting Council approval to build on the site.

By 2000 the College took a different direction when it was named Cedars Christian College and commenced its Higher School Certificate program. It also opened up a number of limited enrolment places to families from outside the church.

Things were looking up. A new funding model and a physical transformation began to take place.

history-2In 2001 the new Science labs and Library were built, and the three sub-school model was adopted. A Middle School was built above new technics labs housing kitchens and workshops.

Up until 2007, the College saw a physical expansion and consolidation. A new Principal in 2007 saw a renewed focus on building the culture of the school with a focus on excellence among staff, students and the community to meet the needs of 21st century learners.

2011 saw major building programs which resulted in the Cedars Leadership Centre and Performance Space. In 2013 we welcomed our new Principal, Steve Walton.

The future looks bright. A new Early Learning Centre and plans to develop existing buildings are underway.

In 35 years the school has grown from 24 students from 6 families in 1 church, to approximately 640 student from 370 families from 25 churches.

And on Monday afternoons, Ps Joan Beard can be seen walking up the path past the Library where a memorial portrait of her late husband, Bill Beard, hangs; as she continues to faithfully pray for the College.
