民國三十五年四月，銅鑼、三義、西湖三鄉熱心教育人士，鑒於教育之重要，乃倡議設立本校，定名為「私立文林初級中學」，於是六月呈准成立董事會。
銅鑼位於三義、西湖兩鄉之間，交通便利，山明水秀、民風純樸，是最適宜陶冶學子之地，故設校於現址。當年八月間開始招生，錄取學生一五○名，九月正式開 學。創辦之初，暫借銅鑼國民學校上課。
民國四十一年八月，地方人士為期本校有更大之成就，益以發揚光大計，乃呈請苗栗縣政府將本校改隸縣立，於民國四十一年十一月奉准更名為「苗栗縣立文林初級中學」。
民國五十七年八月實施九年國民教育，校名更為「苗栗縣立文林國民中學」。
