Description
This uniform, designed by Laurence Xu, is the most culturally symbolic piece in the entire collection, drawing closest to the silhouette of traditional Eastern dress. Centered on a modernized qipao, its lines follow the body without constriction, expressing a feminine elegance that is restrained, dignified, and refined. The uniform itself reads as a wearable cultural artifact.
A stand collar anchors the design, with deep navy piping extending downward along an asymmetrical front closure. This detail references traditional Chinese frog closures and overlapping plackets, yet replaces physical fastenings with embroidery and linear detailing, giving the garment a lighter and more contemporary character. The short sleeves preserve the qipao’s balanced proportions while enhancing freedom of movement, allowing the classical form to integrate seamlessly into a modern airline service environment.
The textile pattern is the visual centerpiece. Set against a white base, layered blue motifs of water ripples, clouds, and ocean waves unfold across the fabric, subtly accented with touches of red and gold. The composition is rich yet controlled. At the hem, wave patterns rise upward in a manner reminiscent of Chinese landscape painting—where negative space and flowing motion coexist—naturally drawing the eye to the lower portion of the dress. This creates a stable yet rhythmic visual focus while symbolically evoking aviation’s role in connecting sky and sea, crossing oceans and distances.
The overall palette of blue and white conveys a sense of quietness and distance characteristic of Eastern aesthetics. Paired with dark stockings and silver shoes, the ensemble maintains a crisp modernity within its classical framework, avoiding any sense of nostalgia or theatricality. With no extraneous accessories to distract the eye, the garment itself takes center stage, fully demonstrating haute couture’s precise control over proportion, material, and pattern.
