Founded in 1922 and situated on the East Rand of Gauteng, Benoni High School maintains and cherishes a rich history and strong sense of tradition. The school pursues excellence in academic, sport and cultural activities and our motto – Quam Optime – (Better than the Best) – is an important part of the lifeblood of our school. Learners and staff are encouraged to strive to achieve in everything they do.
Rated as one of the top ten schools in Gauteng and the top English-medium government school in the province, Benoni High continues to offer an excellent standard of education to its 1 560 multi-culturally diverse learners. The school sees its role as assisting to form well-rounded and holistic individuals. As a testament to this ethos, the school has maintained an exemplary academic record (100% matric pass rate, yet again, in 2013.)
At a breakfast in February 2014 hosted by the Mayor, Benoni High School received the award as the Top School in Ekurhuleni. At the Annual Awards Ceremony for schools held in February 2014, Benoni High also received the following Awards: Top School in Ekurhuleni North, 100% Matric Pass Rate, Best Maths and Maths Literacy Department, Best Physical Science Department, Best Economics Department, Best Geography Department, Best Afrikaans Department, Best English Department, Best Life Sciences Department, Best Civil Technology Department, Benoni high also received the award for Top Student in Ekurhuleni North.
Benoni High has an extensive and varied extra-mural programme. We pride ourselves in the achievement of our cultural and sporting activities.
The Benoni High Pipe Band participated in the World Pipe Band Championships in 2009, in Glasgow. They came home as World Champions, the first and only South African band to do so. In 2012 we could unfortunately not attend the World Championships to defend the title as it is a very expensive exercise and we could not raise the necessary funds or sponsorship. We did, however, compete in South Africa where we, once again, won the South African Championships, having done so consecutively since 1992, a record which will be hard to beat.
Rugby at Benoni High is of the highest standard with all teams doing well in both the “Beeld Trofee” and the “PUK Series”.
Soccer at Benoni High School rates among the strongest in the country.
Our cricket teams compete exceptionally well in the Platinum league and in the Pro-Twenty series.
Boys and girls hockey have also done exceptionally well, winning the league and tournaments.
Benoni High is the strongest English-medium High School – winning the A Section Inter-High Athletics for the past 11 years.
Swimming at Benoni High is also of the highest standard – winning the A section Inter High 10 times in the past 11 years.
Creating a sense of community is important at the school, as well as encouraging learners to develop a sense of responsibility towards the community. The school’s debutantes raised in excess of R130 000 for various charity. In keeping with this, the school tries to inculcate in its pupils the importance of self-awareness, self-discipline, good manners, respect and pride. The “Madd” Society (Music, Arts, Drama, Debating) is very active and pupils are afforded the opportunity to write, produce and direct their own plays annually. The school has an exceptional Choir and our Debaters and Public Speakers regularly win bursaries to study overseas.
One thing remains certain among the many uncertainties of life: at Benoni High School we continue to challenge the mundane and seek to be more educationally innovative in order to bring all our pupils to excellence according to each individual's potential.
