After extensive consultation over a number of years with parent communities of both Waikohu College and Te Karaka Primary School and the wider community, a majority vote supported the establishment of a new area school catering for years 1 - 13 in Te Karaka. In early 2010 the decision to close both Waikohu College and Te Karaka Primary at the end of the year, and open a new area school in 2011, was confirmed by the Associate Minister of Education the Honourable Pita Sharples. Although the decision was recieved with a great deal of sadness, elation was felt by many that Te Karaka would retain both primary and secondary education into the future.
Te Karaka Area School began in February 2011 with an approximate roll of 215 comprising year 1-13 students. The new school was planned to be fully situated on the Waikohu College site once extensive re-building had taken place.
