South Westland Area School is a year 1 to 13 Area School located on the West Coast of the South Island on the outskirts of Hari Hari, serving a community extending 75 km north to Hokitika, and 70km south to Franz Josef Glacier and beyond.
The school has a very supportive community and is supported by the Board of Trustees as well as the Parents and Friends of the School.
Our school covers 3 hectares and is very well resourced. As well as the usual classroom resources and a science laboratory, we have a modern Technology suite catering for hard and soft materials as well as food and ICT.
We also have a community library, an adventure playground, full size gymnasium, a permanent cross-country track, a covered 25 metre swimming pool, a full size horse arena as well as extensive playing fields and sealed netball/tennis courts.
Outdoor education resources include kayaks, optimist yachts and tramping equipment.
Unfortunately our newly completed hut at the mouth of the Saltwater Lagoon has been lost due to rapid sea and river erosion but we have just had a new safer site approved by the Department of Conservation so we intend to relocate and rebuild on the new site in the near future.
