Islamia Girls School

The first Islamia School was a small primary school, founded by Yusuf and Fawziah Islam in 1983 – over three decades ago, in Queens Park, London. The idea was to bring their children up in a secure Islamic environment, but without losing out on a strong all-round education. Beginning with just 13 toddlers in a large detached house, the school quickly grew in reputation and was soon oversubscribed.

Happily, due to its popularity (and a fait bit of campaigning) Islamia Primary School went on to become the first Muslim school in the country to be granted government funding.

Based on the Primary Schools success, Islamia Girls School, our first secondary school, was founded in 1989 due to overwhelming demand and a need for higher education in a similar caring and holistic environment. Again, beginning with one cohort of students, aged 11, the school’s reputation grew and every year a new cohort was added.

In 1994, our eldest students, having reached age 16, were entered for the national examinations. That year, the school shot to the top of the examination league tables in the local London borough.

Since then our school has never looked back. It has transformed itself from its humble beginnings into a roaring success. There have been many changes along the way, all of which have added positively to the school, and though the school has been awarded Outstanding in two successive Ofsted inspections - recognising it officially as an exceptional school - we are still keen to continue improving.

Our school has been visited by prominent individuals, including HRH Prince Charles and the legendary boxer, Muhammad Ali. We are very proud that in turn our students take part in many events, including those held by members of parliament and various other prominent entities.

In terms of our location, we have seen Queens Park flourish over the years into the exciting corner of London it is today. Our school building, which was previously the location of the prestigious Kilburn Grammar School, is traditional on the outside yet now incorporates up to date facilities boasting, amongst other things, a hi-tech computer suite, fully equipped gymnasium and science laboratories, and a spacious hall for congregational prayers, assemblies and school events. Though our school building is smaller than many others, we are very proud that we have managed to retain a special family feeling that has not left us since inception.
