About
Penguin District School is a co-educational, birth to grade 10 public school situated in the beautiful seaside township of Penguin on the North-West Coast of Tasmania.
Penguin is situated close to two North West cities. The city of Burnie is 19km (a 19 minute drive) to our west while the city of Devonport is 32.8km (a 28 minute drive) to our east.
Our school is nestled below the Dial Range which boasts many well known walking tracks and recreational areas. We are fortunate to be surrounded by a number of significant sporting facilities which we utilise to enhance the many educational programs we deliver to our students. We share a border with the Penguin Athletics Track and Penguin Basketball Centre. We are a short walk from the Penguin golf club and Penguin Mountain Bike Club. The Penguin tennis club is situated on our property.
Prior to 2014 our school operated as two separate entities, each with a proud and well-deserved reputation of excellence. During 2012 the Principals of Penguin Primary School, Penguin High School and Riana Primary School, along with Tasmanian Department of Education staff and representatives of the three school communities, began exploring the possibilities of amalgamating their schools to benefit the educational outcomes of all students within the Penguin/Riana area.
Near the end of this process the Riana school community decided to continue as one school, servicing the needs of students within their community. At the beginning of term 2, 2013 a Principal was appointed to lead the two schools through the amalgamation process. Near the beginning of 4th term, 2013 a significant community event designed to map the future direction of one public school within the Penguin community was held.
The Future Search Conference was held at the Penguin Community Learning Centre, a BER funded community facility situated at the Primary school. The Future search bought 8 stakeholder groups together over 3 days and was run by two external facilitators. Each group consisted of 8 invited members who were each connected by a common thread - to create the best possible 21st century educational facility that catered for the needs of all students within the Penguin community.
