民國五十六年，政府遵照先總統 蔣公指示推行九年國民教育並自五十七學年度起普遍實施，
本校適於實施九年國教第一期計劃之時於五十七年四月十六日奉准設校，
經南投鎮前鎮長張慶沛先生籌劃，選定校址於南投鎮大庄路東側一舊地名牛食水，
定名為「南投縣立南崗國民中學」。
