民國五十七年政府實施九年國民義務教育，關西鎮國中學生激增，原關西國中學區遼闊，錦山、玉山、東光三國小畢業生，就學殊感不便。地方熱心教育人士乃於民國五十八年夏，促請縣政府及鎮公所組成「建校委員會」並聘請關西國中校長陳從傑 先生為主任委員。並結合新富、東光二里之名，於五十九年春奉准成立「新竹縣立富光國民中學」。
