本校創立於民國57年，是政府明令實施九年義務教育後，高雄市的第一所國民中學。
本校地處愛河西岸，風光明媚，是一個理想的教育園地。由於本校地點適中、區域內名勝古蹟廟宇多座、地方耆老熱心鄉土文化傳承者頗眾等，社區教學資源豐富，家長社經水準很高，極適合朝精緻化教育方向發展。教師教學認真、社團活動多樣化，並擁有體育館一座，內含球場、游泳池、桌球室及舞蹈室等。 課餘時間，本校游泳池也對外開放，為社區民眾提供一良好健身、運動、休閒場所。
