Description

This cabin crew uniform of Ryanair became one of the key symbols of the airline’s “Always Getting Better” initiative, representing the carrier’s transition from focusing primarily on low fares toward placing greater emphasis on brand image and passenger experience.

Ryanair’s previous uniforms were well known for their highly saturated bright blue and yellow colors. While visually recognizable, they were often criticized for appearing overly aggressive and inexpensive. The redesigned uniform introduced a deeper, more refined navy palette, using more mature colors and improved tailoring to create a modern and professional airline image.

The uniform was designed by Dublin-born designer Emma Collopy. She was invited to participate in Ryanair’s redesign project shortly before graduating and, after numerous proposals and revisions, ultimately created a design that balanced both “contemporary” and “classic” aesthetics. According to Collopy, the airline wanted a look that felt modern yet timeless, resulting in a streamlined design that maintains a clear aviation identity without excessive ornamentation.

In terms of silhouette, the uniform follows the classic combination of a tailored blazer and pencil skirt, emphasizing clean and fluid lines for a sharper overall appearance. The deep navy base enhances sophistication and gives the uniform the atmosphere of a more established international airline. Ryanair’s signature gold-yellow branding color remains present, but in a more restrained and refined manner through scarves, neckwear, pocket piping, and accessory details, creating a more balanced and visually enduring look.

Accessories play a major role in the overall styling. The yellow scarf acts as the primary visual highlight, creating a vivid contrast against the navy background while preserving strong brand recognition. The design also incorporates numerous subtle details, such as yellow trim on the cuffs of the white blouse, yellow accents inside the skirt slit, and a yellow PVC belt, allowing the uniform to retain a sense of liveliness within its minimalist structure.

Notably, the final design was selected through a vote by cabin crew members, allowing frontline employees to participate in the decision-making process and increasing both practicality and wearer acceptance. Emma Collopy later remarked that seeing thousands of cabin crew members wearing a uniform she designed—and being seen by millions of passengers—was an especially meaningful achievement.
