Carletonville is a gold-mining town in western Gauteng, South Africa. It is one of the richest gold-producing areas in the world. At 3749 m, Western Deep Levels is one of the world's deepest mines. Developed by various mining companies from 1973 onwards, the town - which was named after the long-serving mining director of Consolidated Gold Fields, Guy Carleton Jones - not officially incorporated until 1959. CARLETON JONES HIGH SCHOOL, also named after Guy Carleton Jones, had its origin as a Group II school in 1957, becoming a fully-fledged English Medium High School in 1961. The school was initially housed in temporary classrooms, moving into the present permanent buildings in 1966. Guy Carleton Jones was described as the man who made the greatest single contribution to the prosperity of South Africa's gold mining industry. Our school's name, Carleton Jones High School is therefore significant to our mining community. An example of academic vision and determination to excel, Guy Carleton Jones attended university and qualified as a mining engineer who was known for his initiative when solving difficult problems on the mines. Our school's name is unique and aptly named for the town in which it is situated, Carletonville. The long standing history of our gold mines has seen dividends returned to our school by way of bursaries and donations. THE MOTTO: INITIATIVE This brings us to our motto "Initiative". This phrase inspires and encapsulates the values and ideals of the school community. Guy Carleton Jones was intrumental in the discovery of the rich gold reef, later named the West Wits Line. The Oxford dictionary defines the word "initiative" as: "the power or opportunity to act or take charge before others do". This "initiative" is what we strive to achieve to stand out amongst many of our competitors.
